Permarail was formed in June 2002, by Dr Mike Ramsbottom, to cater for the arising need to compile project-specific EMC Safety Cases for railway systems. Prior to this Mike had been employed in electrical manufacturing and then as a consultant gaining EMC experience for electrification, signalling, telecommunications and rolling stock.

From this starting point, Permarail has continued to grow its expertise and knowledge base to now cover the EMC aspects for the entire railway. Many projects have been successfully completed for electrification, rolling stock, stations, depots and railway infrastructure in the UK, North America, Canada, India and Hong Kong.

In 2019, Permarail joined the Navitas Engineering Group, an electrical engineering consultancy providing services to the railway and electricity supply industries. Together our teams provide engineering support that covers the complete asset life-cycle, including feasibility studies, option assessment and selection, outline design, detailed design and engineering support during the implementation, operation and maintenance phases.
